At 13:00 the fire department was dispatched to Heights Elementary school on an activated fire alarm. At the time of the alarm the school was occupied due to a recreation basketball game going on in the gymnasium. Upon arrival of Police and Fire the school had been evacuated.

Upon investigation it was found that the alarm was caused by a broken hot water pipe in the cafeteria, which was flowing water into a smoke head. While fire crews attempted to shut down the water a cold water pipe in the same room broke.

Water to the entire school had to be shut off as well as the electric to the cafeteria. The fire alarm to the effected wing had to be disabled and due to the condition of the school, all activities cancelled.

The school will remain closed until all the problems have been fixed and cleared by the Fire Prevention Bureau, Health Department and Building Department. All issues are expected to be corrected and the school reopened well before the start of school on Tuesday the 20th.
