The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department hosts local residents for the awarding of plaques to the winners of our annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest highlighting National Fire Prevention Week.

Children from Dogwood Hills, Heights and Manito Elementary schools submitted posters that focused on fire safety and prevention. Winners, selected from entries received from all three schools, were presented with awards for their poster design and message by Oakland Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert Knapp and Lieutenant Vincent Dies.

Parents and children were also treated to various safety demonstrations, taught how Fire Fighters use high pressure hoses to put out fires and what to do when smoke engulfs a home and how to safely exit the building.

Also participating in the night's events was Captain Jeffrey Marcheso from the Oakland Volunteer First Aid Squad who gave demonstrations on the types of equipment carried on each ambulance rig and some basic first aid. Police Officer Don Harvey was also on hand to answer questions and show off one of the new police Tahoes
