Franklin Lakes Historic Barn Burner

By Firefighter Larry Baills
April 24, 2012

Flames tore through a barn that was built in the 1800's in Franklin Lakes on the morning of April 24th, that required a two alarm response calling in mutual aid from neighboring towns.

The fire in the rear of 362 Pulis Ave. started shortly after 8:00 AM, and was pushing heavy smoke and fire by the time firefighters arrived at the scene. A second alarm was transmitted. Multiple lines were stretched and put in operation. Franklin Lakes Ladder 342 was backed into the driveway and set up it's ladder pipe.

Eventually most of the approximately 40 X 50 structure collapsed and the fire was quickly knocked down despite low hydrant pressure. Luckily for the homeowners, the building was built on a hill and the lowest section was a three door garage that only received smoke and water damage. In the garage was a classic Model A Ford that was spared any fire damage.

The fire was placed under control in less than one hour with no reported injuries. The cause is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.
