| OAKLAND, N.J. - At 9 a.m. on October 30, the Oakland Police Dept. received a report of a vehicle fire on Longhill Road. The first police officer to arrive reported a working fire. While en route, Oakland Fire Dept.'s Asst. Chief Bob Knapp requested an engine to respond from Franklin Lakes for manpower. Chief Knapp arrived on scene and assumed command. He was quickly informed that the van may contain hazardous materials used for cleaning vehicles. Engine 1031 with a 4-man crew arrived about a minute later and stretched a 2-inch handline. The fire proved to be stubborn, as the back of the van contained a diesel fuel-driven steam cleaner. Engine 1032 and Franklin Lakes Engine 335 arrived about three minutes later. Both crews were put to work for overhaul operations and runoff contaiment. Bergen County HazMat responded and determined that there was no enviromental impact and the roadway was opened about four hours later. |
