The Deparmtent responded to it's usual amount of fire alarms at residences, gas leak emergencies, and a couple or more fires that where nothing out of the ordinary for a typical year. Though it would of been a typical year, if it hadn't of been for a couple of storms that the town endured, causing alot of destruction, not only in Oakland but throughout the coast. Hurricane Irene and the wicked early snow storm felt in mid fall created hundreds of emergency calls, non the less the Oakland Fire Department battled through like the other surrounding Fire Departments, to make their town safe. The town made it through those big storms, and as all does, life went on. The Oakland Fire Deparment had numerous achievements this year. New record set in Fire Calls 543 in 2011, beating the old record of 409 Fire Calls set back in 2007. Oakland Fire Department won it's 4th consecutive North West Bergen Mutual Aid Field Day championship. The Christening of the Rescue Truck 1042 All in all a very long year but a very productive and memorable year. Tue, 03 Jan 2012 19:14:28 GMT http://www.oaklandfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=282 The Wallington Holiday Parade Sets the Holiday Mood http://www.oaklandfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=281 This year's 10th annual Wallington Holiday Parade proved to be yet another enjoyable experience for the Oakland Fire Department. An impressive showing was made for this year's event with Company 3's award-winning Fire Department Bus(previously winning the "Special Judges Award") and with 1044 pulling a wonderfully-decorated float. The Wallington Holiday Parade has always been one of the most enjoyable events of the Christmas Season, serving as an excellent transition to get the OFD prepared for its annual Santa Claus event(See "Santa Claus is Coming to Oakland). To recap some of the highlights, this year's line-up of well-decorated, perhaps over-the-top, trucks was very interesting. One of the departments personal favorites was from the Emerson Fire Department. Their extremely elaborate float was modeled in the likeness of a helicopter(See Pic). Jefferson Township also had an impressive float complete with comfortable chairs, a podium of sorts, and a faux chimney. While the picture fails to capture it in its full glory, the Glen Rock Fire Department had a portable movie theater on their float! So, that's a quick recap of the 2011 Wallington Holiday Parade. The Oakland Fire Department always enjoys this event and looks forward to attending next year's! (September 28, 2011) – Joe and Anne Torre, residents of Oakland and Board members of Companion Animal Advocates, recently donated a set of pet oxygen masks to the Oakland Fire Department on behalf of Companion Animal Advocates (CAA). The masks come in three sizes for large, medium and small dogs/cats. These specially sized masks will enable firefighters or EMT's to deliver oxygen to pets in need and in some cases save their lives. If you are interested in donating a set of oxygen masks to your community, please contact Christine at CAA at 201-706-7666. The $100 tax-deductible donation includes: 3 oxygen masks (1 small, 1 medium & 1 large), 3 oxygen air tubes (1 for each mask, 22 mm diameter), 1 O2 Fur Life carry bag (for storage & mobility), 1 laminated instruction sheet (includes ABCs of CPR For Cats & Dogs), 1 kennel lead (for animal restraint & control), 2 "Pet Oxygen Masks On Board" decals (for display on vehicle and in department), 1 PowerPoint presentation (for personnel training), 1 instructional DVD "Pets Need Oxygen Too" (1 per order), 2 animal incident report (AIR) forms for first responders (carbonless 3-part) and a pet rescue notice form (printable document, PDF). Wed, 16 Nov 2011 00:01:14 GMT http://www.oaklandfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=280 Not Your Average Halloween Weekend! http://www.oaklandfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=279 Heavy snowfall on trees that have not yet lost their summer foliage caused for a very busy weekend in the Borough, causing very dangerous road conditions, taking trees and powerlines down across town, and causing a few transformers to explode. The Fire Department spent almost the entire day of Saturday and a good amount of time Sunday responding to various fire alarms, burning powerlines and transformers, and a working structure fire in Franklin Lakes. Members of the department spent the whole storm away from their own homes, sacrificing work on their own property in order to keep the rest of town safe, and on their own time, many members went around town Sunday to help the DPW cut up and clear many of the trees from the roadways around town. The storm may have been worse than expected, but Oakland's First Responders were there for the residents. Tue, 01 Nov 2011 00:20:04 GMT http://www.oaklandfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=279 Fire Prevention Night a Huge Success http://www.oaklandfd.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=276 The Oakland Fire Department hosted "Fire Prevention Night" on Monday night 10/10/11. The evening opened up with the presentation of awards by Chief Knapp for the winners of the poster contest. This contest is held between the 3 public schools grades K-5. Once that was completed the department showed everyone the brand new rescue truck that arrived 2 weeks ago. The men then held a demonstration of the rescue tools cutting open a motor vehicle as we would on a motor vehicle accident. Firefighters then showed the public how the thermal imaging camera (TIC) works. While all of this was going on the children had an opportunity to spray the fire houses at mock houses. This is always a big hit with the kids. Also on attending for the public to ask questions and see their equipment were the Oakland First Aid Squad, Oakland Police Department and the NJ State Police. The Oakland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary served refreshments to everyone. Always another big hit with the kids. A big thank you needs to out to Lt. Vincent Dies for coordinating this entire event and also all the members that attended to help make this evening a success. The calls consisted of downed wires, collasped industrial roofs, trees down on houses, compromised foundations, evacuations, water rescues, securing utilities, fires and activated alarms. Several neighborhoods along the Ramapo River were advised to immediately evacuate because of the rapid rising water. Ex-Chief Pete Sondervan took on the role of Fire Dispatcher and dispatched responding apparatus/personnel and prioritized rescue teams throughout the entire hurricane. OEM personnel Bob DeBoer and Jane Madden were also at the fire desk which doubles as the "EOC" Emergency Operations Center and handled OEM issues. Some residents tried to ride the flood out and quickly realized the ferocity and depth of the water was just too much and called for help. Oakland required additional Swift Water Rescue Teams from Mahwah, Oradell and Fairlawn to assist people escape from their homes. One person tried to wade through the torrent current and was swept downstream. Mahwah's Swift Water Rescue Team launched their air boat into the fast moving water and saved this man's life.
