By Photographer Frank Di Pentima
January 4, 2014

On Friday, January 3rd, the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, along with members of the Oakland Police Department, Oakland First Aid Squad, Ringwood and Pompton Fire Departments and First Aid Squads were dispatched to perform an ice rescue on a 34 year old male who had fallen through the ice in Ringwood State Park.

The male victim was apparently walking on the snow covered Ramapo Lake when the ice broke away and he fell into the water. Help was called by quick thinking residents who also supplied a ladder to Oakland Fire Chief Curt LeRoy and Oakland Police Officer Thomas Pianettini who were first to arrive on the scene. Also assisting in the on ice rescue was Oakland Firefighter Stephen Longa.

Additionally on-shore support and assistance was provided to the three men participating in the on ice rescue by members of the Oakland, Ringwood and Pompton fire departments, the Oakland police department and members of the Oakland, Ringwood and Pompton first aid squads.

Once the rescue was completed, the male victim was transported by ambulance to St Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. Oakland Fire Chief Curt LeRoy, Oakland Police Officer Thomas Pianettini and Oakland Firefighter Stephen Longa were all treated on the scene for weather related conditions.

Congratulations to all who participated in this life saving effort. Your dedication to training in all types of conditions is what makes your volunteer efforts to our community priceless.
