March 30, 2013

Over the course of three different days, Assistant Chief and Training Officer Curt LeRoy, coordinated three different training sessions for members of the Fire Department.

Training was conducted in the following three areas: Session 1 - Bailout, Session 2 - Situation Response, and Session 3 - Flashover.

Bailout – training was conducted to at the Bergen County Fire Academy on the proper way to use safety equipment when bailing out of a burning structure. Each fireman carries a bailout kit on their person as part of his or her safety equipment and each kit contains a hook that is attached to a 50 foot escape line that can hold up to 5,000 pounds.

The hook is used to secure a hold inside the structure, typically in the window area, and then the fireman reaches out the window to check for a fire ladder and if none is present then they bailout headfirst holding the escape line in one hand and balancing themselves along the structure with the other.

While descending, the fireman would hold the escape rope in a upright position - at 12 O'clock - and slowly lowering the hand holding the escape rope to descend the burning structure. They can control their decent based on how far and fast they lower their hand from 12 O'clock to 3 O'clock.

Training was held indoors at the BCFA's two-story bailout structure.
